The News, Eats & Events Shaping Western New York |
Eight beagles rescued from a controversial Wisconsin testing facility are now discovering life’s simple joys in New York.
After years in inhumane conditions, they've stepped into freedom, initially unsure but quickly becoming playful and curious.
For the first time, these dogs are feeling soft carpets and green grass instead of cold wire cages, experiencing warmth, play, and gentle human touch.
Wyoming County’s Against All Oddz Animal Alliance is guiding their transformation, providing medical care, nourishment, and safe space.
The group, co-founded by Matt Albert, focuses on helping the dogs recover and learn to trust.
Once healed, the beagles will be ready for adoption, and experienced rehabilitators are encouraged to help these resilient pups thrive.
Despite their traumatic past, these beagles are embracing love and proving the remarkable strength of their spirit. Read More... |
Over 500 people gathered at Wayland Brewing Company in Orchard Park on May 31, 2026, for the third annual Lyme WNY 5K, a vibrant event aimed at increasing awareness of Lyme disease.
Runners and walkers followed a USATF-certified 5K route, enjoying scenic views and a supportive community, with reliable timing and a convenient water station halfway through.
After the race, participants celebrated with live music from Voyagr, a festive raffle, and exclusive craft brews — with Wayland Brewing donating $1 per special brew purchase to Lyme WNY.
The event’s focus was on educating locals about tick prevention and spotlighting available resources for those battling Lyme disease.
All race proceeds fund grants for Western New Yorkers in need of Lyme disease treatment, reflecting the community’s strong commitment to both support and prevention. Read More... |
Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown marks its remarkable 300th anniversary in 2026, offering Western New York a unique story as the United States observes its 250th year.
Founded in 1726 by French forces at the mouth of the Niagara River, the historic French Castle remains the oldest building in the Great Lakes.
This landmark has shifted from French to British to American control, influencing pivotal moments during the French and Indian War, American Revolution, and War of 1812, thanks to its strategic position.
The tricentennial season includes symposiums, live reenactments, and multicultural events.
Notably, June’s anniversary weekend featured historic reenactments, Haudenosaunee performances, and a grand rededication with dignitaries from three nations.
Looking ahead, August brings a Revolutionary War encampment and nighttime immersive activities, enhancing local engagement.
Ongoing support and sponsorships help preserve Old Fort Niagara’s legacy for generations, underscoring its role as a living symbol of resilience and heritage. Read More... |
